Position Summary

Under the direction of Obesity Canada’s Communication Director, this position is responsible for creating engaging content for the network’s social media presence, including keeping social media channels update and brand-focused.  The incumbent must have exceptional computer skills with a solid understanding of office procedures and practices. The candidate should also possess strong communication, customer relations and organizational skills. He/she also works well on his/her own, but is also able to work as part of a creative team. Experience with video editing, conducting interviews, writing stories, and implementing social media activities would be strong assets. The successful candidate will demonstrate an interest in taking on increasing responsibility, an aptitude for learning on the job, and enthusiasm.

 Responsibilities / Activities

  • Assist with the creation of stories for the Obesity Canada’s Weight of Living Initiative (a series of stories which cover the difficulties and successes that come with obesity from the perspective of persons living with obesity); this includes conducting interviews with persons living with obesity, writing short stories, collecting photographs, and disseminating these stories through social media platforms.
  • Assist with issues or duties related to social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google AdWords, Webinars), as they pertain to our public engagement and professional education programs
  • Maintain Obesity Canada’s social media channels, including Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and other relevant platforms
  • Engages in social media presence creation on new and emerging social media platforms
  • Creates dynamic written, graphic, and video content
  • Optimizes content following search engine optimization (SEO)
  • Creates content that promotes audience interaction, increases audience presence on company sites, and encourages audience participation
  • Assists management with large projects, events, and community management
  • Works as part of a team to develop large social media campaigns
  • Analyses and reports audience information and demographics, and success of existing social media projects
  • Proposes new ideas and concepts for social media content
  • Works with marketing and social media team members to coordinate ad campaigns with social media strategy
  • Writes e-newsletter content
  • Works with the Communication Director and the Scientific Director to assist with managing social media communications
  • Uses timelines and scheduled content to create a consistent stream of new content for audience interaction while analysing, managing, and altering schedules where necessary to optimize visits

Qualifications and experience:

  • Experience with Microsoft operating systems and Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel etc.)
  • Experience in video editing and photography an asset
  • Experience in conducting qualitative interviews and writing stories an asset
  • Self-starter, able to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team
  • Time management, communication and organizational skills are essential

Please note since this position is partly funded by  a government program, the applicant must be;

  • reside or attend school in Alberta with an Alberta address
  • are enrolled in a program that will result in a Certificate, Diploma, or Degree
  • have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
