POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN BARIATRIC CARE AND REHABILITATION

The Department of Occupational Therapy, Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta is offering a postdoctoral position in obesity management, bariatric care and health service design working with Dr. Mary Forhan.

Dr. Forhan is an Associate Professor and Director of the Bariatric Care and Rehabilitation Research Group (BCRRG) within the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine. The overall aim of the BCRRG is to improve the quality of care and rehabilitation outcomes for patients living with obesity and to reduce the disability experienced by persons living with obesity. Dr. Forhan leads a number of projects focused on improving the quality of care of hospitalized patients with obesity and has led the development of resources and recommendations to improve quality of care of patients with obesity in acute care, community and home care settings. Research includes the development of interventions to address factors in the built and social environment and/or issues associated with
body functions and structures and activity limitations.

A postdoctoral fellow is being sought to strengthen the BCRRG team and to increase it’s capacity for research in the area of health services design and practice behaviour changes in health care settings including homecare, long-term care and supported living. The successful candidate will be involved in and have the opportunity to publish from existing and new projects. Opportunities pertaining to space and industrial design along with development of resources to improve patient and care provider safety will also be available. The PDF will function as a junior investigator participating fully in research and related scholarly activity. Opportunities for teaching in the occupational therapy program are also available. The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Forhan and members of the BCRRG co-investigators, collaborators and staff, and can assume leadership responsibilities to participate in the training and mentorship of graduate students.

Applications are invited from recent PhD graduates. Funding is available to support this two-year position. The base salary range is $50,000-$60,000 CDN per annum. Applicants will have an excellent academic record, a beginning record of publication and a planned research program. Applicants will be encouraged and receive guidance to apply for independent salary and research funding. Successful applications in provincial and national funding competitions for postdoctoral awards would supplement the base salary.
