Today’s blog post comes from Rebecca A.G. Christensen. Rebecca is a PhD Candidate in Epidemiology at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto. On the OC-SNP National Executive, Rebecca serves as the Vice Chair.

It has been quite an unexpected first half of the 2020 year! In the midst of a global pandemic, individuals have been forced to cancel several important events and to live in a very different world than it was just a few short months ago. Unfortunately, this meant we had to cancel our Canadian Obesity Student Meeting (COSM) that was scheduled to take place at York University in June.

During all of this uncertainty, and concern for health, we have also been fortunate enough to see several individuals step up to create amazing content and events during this trying time. This includes the COVID-19 Hope Spotlight Series that has been organized by Obesity Canada. This series features talks by leading obesity experts on issues relevant to weight and the pandemic. It is because of great events like this that the Obesity Canada – Student and New Professionals (OC-SNP) National Executive still wanted to recognize all the fantastic work done by local chapters this past year. Thus, despite the cancellation of COSM, we will be accepting nominations for three awards: (1) OC-SNP Rising Star Award; (2) OC-SNP Champion Award; and (3) OC-SNP Faculty Supervisor Award.

This year, nominations are going to be looking a little different! We want to encourage everyone to nominate someone in whichever way you see fit! This could be by sending a video, voice clip, a written nomination, or really anything you can think of! These nominations will then be used when we announce the winner, and in future promotions of these awards. Just make sure you provide us with the name of the person you are nominating, the award you are nominating them for, an explanation of why you think they deserve this award and how we can contact them should they win. CVs are optional, and self-nominations are also accepted and encouraged!

You will have until August 31st, 2020 to submit your nomination to oc-snp@obesitynetwork.ca. Complete descriptions of the award criteria are listed at the end of this post. We look forward to hearing more about all the amazing things that the OC-SNPs and their faculty support have been up to!
