About Obesity Canada

A national movement where research meets action, education inspires change, and advocacy amplifies voices.

For over 20 years, we’ve been at the forefront of advancing understanding, challenging stigma, and improving the lives of Canadians living with obesity. We believe that every person deserves respect, dignity, and access to compassionate, evidence-based care—regardless of their size.

What started as the Canadian Obesity Network as a group of researchers, healthcare professionals, and advocates, has grown into a national movement and nonprofit organization that combines leading research, impactful education, and bold advocacy to transform the way obesity is perceived, understood, and treated.

Our vision for the future

A world where people living with obesity are understood, respected, and living healthy lives.

We envision a future where obesity is understood as a complex, chronic disease—and where stigma no longer defines how people are treated.

Our mission, purpose, and passion

To improve the lives of Canadians living with obesity

We are dedicated to reducing the impact of obesity on Canadians through advocacy, education, and evidence-based care. Our work is rooted in science and driven by compassion, with strategic goals to:

  • Address the social stigma associated with obesity
  • Change the way policymakers and health professionals approach obesity; and
  • Improve access to evidence-based prevention and treatment resources.

Two decades of change and progress

  • 2006: Established as the Canadian Obesity Network, bringing together researchers, healthcare professionals, and advocates.
  • 2016: Rebranded as Obesity Canada to reflect our broader focus on supporting Canadians living with obesity.
  • 2020: Published the Canadian Adult Obesity Clinical Practice Guidelines, that has since been adapted and referenced globally as a gold standard resource.
  • Today: A trusted voice on obesity science, education, and advocacy in Canada and globally.

Throughout our history, we’ve worked to shift the narrative around obesity, dismantling harmful stereotypes and empowering people to access the care they need.

Why we matter

Obesity is a complex, multifactorial condition that affects millions of Canadians. Despite its widespread prevalence, individuals with obesity often face stigma, discrimination, and inadequate support. Obesity Canada is working to change that. Through our programs, research, and advocacy, we strive to reduce the negative effects of obesity on individuals and society and to improve access to care, treatment, and support for those affected.

Together, we can break down the barriers, combat stigma, and create lasting change.

Join us in our mission to create a healthier, more inclusive Canada for all.

How we’re building the future we want to see

Our 2025 Strategic Plan focuses on three pillars:

  1. Advocacy: Fighting for policies that support equitable access to evidence-based obesity care.
  2. Education: Providing tools and training for healthcare providers, patients, and advocates.
  3. Research: Advancing our understanding of obesity as a complex chronic disease.
