Obesity Canada is aware that our name and logo are being used without permission in misleading ads promoting unproven health products, including ones with weight loss claims.
These ads use Obesity Canada’s name, logo, and the image of our founder, Dr. Arya Sharma, to promote unregulated and unproven products marketed as GLP-1 alternatives under brand or product names such as HHVB-GLP-1, or STDEI-GLP1.
Obesity Canada does not endorse any commercial products or services. As a registered charity, our work focuses on advancing the science of obesity, reducing weight bias and discrimination, and supporting people affected by obesity—not selling unregulated, unproven obesity treatments.
These unauthorized ads are deeply concerning. They exploit public trust in Obesity Canada and other respected health organizations, and spread misinformation about the science of obesity. When trust is used to sell false hope, it puts people at risk—especially those living with chronic, highly stigmatized conditions.
Here are some red flags to watch for if you come across a suspicious health ad:
- Claims that sound too good to be true—like “instant weight loss” or “no effort needed”
- Use of logos from trusted organizations such as Obesity Canada or Diabetes Canada without a direct source or link
- Heavy use of testimonials or transformation photos with no scientific backing
- Missing or incomplete ingredient lists with “proprietary blends” or vague product descriptions
- “Limited time” or “risk-free trial” offers that pressure you to act quickly
Obesity is a complex, chronic disease that deserves respectful, evidence-based treatment. Deceptive marketing tactics such as these fuel stigma and misinformation. You can find trusted, science-backed information about obesity here on our website.
We urge everyone to be cautious of any brand claiming endorsement by Obesity Canada or its leadership. If you come across these claims, please report them to us at info@obesitycanada.ca
We remain committed to supporting Canadians with credible education, research, and advocacy—and we will continue to stand against misinformation and stigma in all its forms.
